Director of the Idrija Mercury Heritage Management Center

Tatjana Dizdarevič, a mining engineer by profession was employed for 30 years at the Idrija Mercury Mine, Slovenia, of which 24 years as the Head of department for safety at work. After the closure of the Idrija Mercury Mine in 2017, she is the director of the Idrija Mercury Heritage Management Center. The Center was established by the Government of Slovenia as a public institute for the purpose of ensuring the integrated and sustainable management of cultural heritage and natural values related to the Idrija mercury deposit in Idrija. In addition to scientific research work and projects in the field of the effects of mercury on the environment and humans, she participated in a working group for preparation of the nomination »Heritage of Mercury. Almadén and Idrija« on UNESCO World Heritage List in the period from 2008 until its entry on the UNESCO list in 2012. Since 2013, she has been a member/secretary/chairperson of the national and international Coordinating Committee of the World Heritage transnational serial property »Heritage of Mercury. Almadén and Idrija« and since 2014 she is also appointed Site Manager for a World Heritage Site in Idrija. Since 2019, she is the president of the national Board for World Cultural and Natural Heritage (the board acts as an expert advisory body of the Slovenian National Commission for UNESCO). In 2005 she received the Peter Schmidt Award, given to the individual whose support, enthusiasm, and energy for the recognition and appreciation of cultural heritage of mining, metallurgy and geosciences stipulates the work and life Peter Schmidt [of Freiberg Mining Academy, Germany] and in 2013 the Joseph Mrak Award, given by the Municipality of Idrija to the members of the Working Group for the preparation of nomination »Heritage of Mercury. Almadén and Idrija« on UNESCO World Heritage List for their excellent execution of the nomination project.
